Now open at 5925 Burnet Rd

Birdhouse Books and Gifts is a neighborhood, community-focused independent bookstore in central Austin, Texas. We are a queer-owned, veteran-owned, and woman-owned business (and all of those are the same person!). We are an indie bookshop focused on inclusivity, community, and welcoming. Our goal is for every person who walks through our doors to feel seen and a sense of belonging here.

Our selection is ever-expanding as we grow within our space. We've got a fun and beautiful kids and middle grade section, and features for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC authors, alongside new fiction and non-fiction for adults. Check back frequently because we are growing and changing every day!

We have opened with a full slate of author events, which are detailed below. We hope to see you soon at the Birdhouse!

  • Saturday, Dec 7 at 11 a.m.: Holiday Storytelling with award-winning storyteller Bernadette Nason
    • Bernadette will delight kids of all ages with her award winning and critically acclaimed story telling!
    • Testimonials from Bernadette's wonderful shows:
      • “Students from every grade were captivated by Bernadette’s presentations. Her preparation and attention to detail made her one of the most compelling storytellers I have had the privilege to watch. She is a true professional, and her love and care for her craft assures us that the quality she delivers to her audience will be outstanding.”

      • “Bernadette Nason has presented her traditional stories at our school since 2002.  Each year, she invites the children to enter another time and place. You would think she had a troupe of ten performers along with her as she performs her stories brimming with colorful characters and a wide range of emotion. She has charm, wit and an unequaled ability to engage audiences fully in her lively presentations. Her love of literature and desire to inspire is a gift to all of us.”

      • “If Monty Python went looking for a female cast member, Bernadette Nason would be an obvious choice. She’s innovative, polished, and funny – a most proper ‘pepper-pot’ of a storyteller.”

    • Free RSVP here for headcount purposes
